What Is a Slot?

A slot is a thin opening or groove. You can use a slot to put things in, such as letters or postcards in the mail. You can also find slots on a computer or video game.

The slots on a machine determine which symbols will appear on each reel, and in which combinations. Each symbol has a different probability of appearing, but all winning symbols must line up on a payline to win. These pay tables can be found on the front of the machine or through a “help” button on the touch screens. The amount of credits won depends on the size and number of the symbols in a winning combination.

Some people think that slot machines have a cycle of hot and cold periods, where the same slots pay out more frequently or less frequently. While this can happen, it is a random process, and no one can predict the pattern.

The slot recommender estimates autoscale slot usage based on peak historical performance. Using this information, the service recommends the maximum reservation slot size that can elevate job performance by at least 5%. You must have the listed permission at the administrator project for edition workloads to view recommendations or change the recommendation settings. When you set the recommended commitment, BigQuery automatically re-evaluates capacity demands across all executing queries and adjusts available slots accordingly. This includes temporarily borrowing slots from other queries when needed, so the remaining reserved slots remain consistent with your estimated autoscale slot usage.
